Rocksprings Texas

Rocksprings is a small busy town at the western edge of the Texas Hill Country. It is the county seat and the only incorporated town in Edwards County. Public access is limited to the approved tours or in the company of a Park Ranger.

Tours to see the Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area originate at the Rocksprings Visitor's Center. The Visitor's Center is located on the Courthouse Square at Sweeten and Main. The Visitor’s Center is open Tuesday thru Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Closed Monday - No Tours on Sunday.

The Sinkhole

Over 1,800 acres of rugged land comprise the Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area. The Devil's Sinkhole is its main attraction. It is the largest single chamber cavern in the state of Texas and the third deepest in the State measuring over 350 feet deep! The Sinkhole is a collapsed limestone cavern with an opening at its top 45 to 65 feet in diameter. Approximately 150 feet from the surface is the top of a mountain contained within the cavern. The Devil's Sinkhole was designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service in 1971. Adding to the allure of the Devil's Sinkhole are the millions of bats that pour out at dusk like a tornado.

The Mexican Free-tailed Bat

There are more than three million Bats that migrate to the Devil's Sinkhole each summer. They come from all across Mexico and Central America. Many of those migrants are pregnant females that migrate north to have their pups in Texas and other areas of the United States. The Mexican Free-tailed Bat has a long narrow wing designed for flying very great distances. They emerge each evening
and fly to the agricultural area to the east and southeast where they feast on insects, mostly moths that are agricultural pests.
